Divine Description of Rahu in Vedic Astrology

Rahu, the North Lunar Node, is the head of the immortal serpent who drank the nectar of amṛta (immortality) during the churning of the cosmic ocean. Though beheaded by Lord Vishnu, Rahu was granted immortality and a place in the cosmic order — not as a planet of punishment, but as a karmic force that drives desire, obsession, and worldly evolution.

He rides a black lion or a vulture and is often depicted with a serpent's body, radiating smoky, electric energy. Rahu does not emit light of his own — he reflects and distorts the light of other planets, which is symbolic of his role as the master of illusion, unconventional thinking, and radical change.

In Vedic astrology, Rahu has no rulership of signs in the classical sense, but he is considered exalted in Taurus (Vrishabha) and most powerful in Gemini (Mithuna). He governs eclipses, foreign elements, technological advances, taboo-breaking, and the sudden or unexpected. He is associated with midnight, with unseen forces, and with the raw hunger of unfulfilled karma.
